Doc Searls today writes a heartfelt birthday tribute to Dave Winer on the occasion of Dave's 50th birthday.

I'm looking forward to meeting Dave tonight at the NY Geek Dinner arranged by Steve Rubel.  I've only followed Dave's writing/thinking/podcasting for the past year or so, but have become very impressed by the breadth and depth of his interests. 

It's hard to be a pioneer (old joke: You know how you can tell the pioneers?  They're the ones with the arrows in their chests.), and Dave's considered one by those who know; a distinctive voice, in every sense of the word!
