That's Peter Gabriel presenting one of this year's TED Prizes to Dr. Larry Brilliant. Brilliant is a remarkable man. Besides being recently named to head Google's philanthropic foundation, Brilliant was highly instrumental in WHO's smallpox campaign, which led to the eradication of that disease in 1977.
The TED Prize is granted to up to three individuals, "who have shown that they can, in some way, positively impact life on this planet." Prize winners are granted $100,000 and a wish. The wish is a kind of challenge to the TED community, a call to mobilize around an issue for which the prize winner has great passion.
Brilliant's wish is to establish a system for the early detection of, and early response to global public heath threats. Bird flu is currently his gravest concern. After listening to Brilliant's acceptance address and attending a special luncheon the following day, I'm excited about the prospects for the development of a non-profit, non-governmental early warning/response system.
The TED Prize is a great platform for launching that system.
