Being almost 60 years of age, there are a few pictures of me at age two. A few. But, today, the lives of millions of two year-olds are chronicled in gigabytes of images.
Like this one, for example.
That's my grandson, Benny, getting his first haircut just the other day. Today's his second birthday.
When Benny's 60, what will his world be like? It's an unimaginable prospect, isn't it? Will he be able to read this post from his grandfather, wishing him a happy second birthday? I would love to have been able to read what my parents' and grandparents' lives were like when I was his age. What a treasury! Will he be able to read his father's explanation of the process his parents used in naming his new brother, Caleb Augustus? I sure hope so.
We're transforming our children's lives by providing them with real-time history in ways we've only begun to appreciate. Amidst all the concerns we have about the future I hope we realize that our children and grandchildren will see what we do more directly than ever before. No after-the-fact rationalizations will do. This time, the whole world really is watching.
What a time to be two!
Happy Birthday, Benny!

That's such a great pic, Tom.

Great shot, Tom. I so remember that look on Alex's face with his first haircut. I'm wondering if Benny did the same thing - Alex had to take some time out to think when he got home. He seemed very pensive for quite a few hours. It was as though getting his first haircut was a rite of passage going from being a little bundle of Id to realizing that he was now a member of society - people get haircuts so I'm in a clan now.

Well, Jeremy took that shot, Annie, so I'll have to ask him about the post-trim landscape. We're heading up to Boston on Saturday for the "official" party. Look forward to seeing y'all down there in Texas real soon!

Hmm...I don't recall him taking any time when we got home. We did some more errands after the cut though so maybe he was pondering his jump from baby to little boy in the car?
It is absolutely amazing though how just having his haircut has changed his appearance so much. Crazy how much he has "aged" in the last few weeks, from getting his first trim to becoming a big brother, he has certainly changed.
