So, I'm watching the Missouri-Northwestern Whatever Bowl game and the ESPN announcer mention that there were, "a lot of [college football] quarterbacks around the country" who were from the State of Texas.
Caught my attention. Hmm. That's interesting. Why might that be?
Because, says the announcer, Texas high school football authorities have, for the last decade, focused on "seven on seven" drills. These are scrimmages which include no offensive or defensive linemen, allowing the "skill position" players greater innovative space, lacking the threat of being crushed by a 300 lb. defensive lineman.
Result? Texas-bred skill position players are more successful at the college level. Coaches are "huge proponents" of what this kind of practice does for both offensive and defensive players. Most of all there is a "plethora" of Texas quarterbacks in college football today. Whereas Texas has always produced great football players, the state was never known for exporting quarterbacks. That's changed. This new approach has resulted in a whole new breed of quarterback coming out of Texas high schools.
And, our announcers report, those players (presumably, quarterbacks foremost amongst them) are making recommendations to their college coaches (e.g., "we did this in high school and tweaked it to make it work") that are being implemented immediately.
Think about that. Bottom up football strategy emerging from the Lonestar State!

Tom,
I am fascinated by what little I know of the culture of football coaches. I've spoke for the state association before and there seems to always be a few highly innovative thinkers and practitioners leading the way. As a group they seem to be a learning organization.
Would be a fun study to pursue. Maybe, most likely, someone has and I've yet to come across it.
