It's impossible for business leaders to keep up with the pace of technological change. Hardware, software, social media, cloud computing. Each new development holds new promises and new challenges.
But the fundamentals of business success remain alarmingly simple:
- Trust - Developing and maintaining trusting relationships trumps all. That means all relationships within your business ecosystem: customers, employees, partners. Doing the right thing and keeping your word is the simplest path to trust.
- Empathy - maybe trust depends on empathy or maybe it's the other way around but which comes first isn't important because without one, the other is in jeopardy. What is empathy? Simple: seeing the world from the other's perspective and taking that perspective into account in all dealings.
- Communication - Trite, right? Nope. Open, honest, rich communication will solidify trust and enhance empathy. How should you communicate? Create multiple channels for gathering ideas and respecting them with responses.
Whenever you find yourself getting lost in a conversation about mobile apps, augmented reality or Twitter, take a step back and ask yourself how these new technologies will enhance the quality of the human relationships that make all the difference in your business.
